First and foremost, THANK YOU!!! I’m so excited for you to be part of the history of the new building!!!! Sincerely, Emily Lux.

Things volunteers need to know (click to expand)
The acrylic paint that I use is non-toxic, but will not wash out of clothing. Please dress accordingly, I don’t want to ruin your favorite shirt :).
In this same vein, the paint will dry on brushes as well. There will be a bucket of water to put your brushes in if you leave for longer than a quick restroom break. If you’re using multiple brushes, I will provide you with a smaller water container to keep brushes that aren’t currently in use hydrated.
This mural is 6’ high x 85’ long, and starts at 4’ off of the ground. Nearly all painting will be done on a scaffolding or ladder. Very minimal painting can be done while standing on the ground. (I’d like to try to reserve most ground-level painting for children, or wheelchair users.) I didn’t want the climbing part to be a surprise for anyone!
This mural was designed by BHS students, based on their feedback and brainstorming over several months. I drew the design based on these conversations. More information can be found in this short video.
Every person volunteering will need to fill out a form.
Current BHS students (including incoming 9th-graders) and staff do not need to fill out the volunteer application.
Current BSD staff does not need to fill out the volunteer application, but will need to sign in at the main office using RAPTOR
All other individuals (including students from other BSD schools) will need to fill out this volunteer application:
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/communications-community-involvement/volunteer
- It says that the application process will take up to ten days, but applications are being rushed for this project. If you already have a current background check, it should be even faster.
- The number of volunteers per session is intentional. We can only accommodate a certain number at a time, so please be sure to only bring folks who signed up officially with you. If you are a large family email Emily at Emily_Lux@beaverton.k12.or.us before registering and we’ll make it happen.
- This is very genuinely an ALL SKILL-LEVELS project. I really mean it. You’re invited and will do fine. The most complicated painting will take place towards the end. There is a combination of a LOT of flat color (think house-painting) all the way up to intensive detail. You can do either (or both!) and the flat color takes many many layers, so we’ll need you for sure even if you say you “can’t paint” (you CAN, I promise!)
- This project is safe and supported, but is also at your own risk. Please understand that any liability is not the responsibility of me (Emily Lux), BHS and/or BSD staff or administration, or our construction teams.
Available shifts:
(Note: You can absolutely sign up for multiple shifts. However, if this is your first time, I recommend signing up for a two-hour slot to start with. It can be more labor-intensive than people realize!)
