Kathleen Gathercoal
Whether I have been painting, teaching, or conducting research, I have always been engaged in illuminating creation. For many years I have created medieval-style illumination and calligraphy documents, using paper or vellum, gouache, and gold. Then I used both watercolors and gouache to allow me to explore the forms and beauty of Oregon birds. Most recently, I have been learning traditional Byzantine icon techniques to give a window into the beauty of creation. I am grateful to photographers (including Leslie Schweitzer), who have ventured into the field to observe and photograph these birds and have allowed me to use their images as my initial inspiration.
